This article was published in the ACBC MediaBlog

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s first invitation to leaders of the world’s religions to gather in Assisi, Italy.  Assisi was originally chosen because of St Francis’ deep connection with people of other faiths even in his time. It was this invitation by John Paul II which first saw a deep sharing between people of different faiths and a celebration of people of good will in a traditional Catholic heartland.

Patrons and Companions

Over the past few years, I have spent a good deal of time speaking to groups both large and small about the saints. Women who have forged a way
Dear Friends,
There is much to celebrate this week about the women who have forged a way in the Church, even at times with some resistance.
It was the feast day of St Teresa of Avila on 15 October, and her prayer is included above.
We also celebrate today one year since the Canonisation of Australia's first Saint Mary MacKillop.
You will read some of the story of Dr Sr Mary Glowrey, a woman who the Catholic Women's League are holding up as a candidate for Sainthood also.
More pertinent even however are the stories included of inspiring women who are present in our parishes, doing immense works of service, and sharing of themselves in the most extraordinary ways.
We hope you enjoy this edition of women matter. Please feel free to send us any stories, thoughts or prayers you think might be of interest.
Many blessings for the weeks ahead,
Beth Doherty

Living Mercy 2

Dear friends,
Last week, I was invited to give a 90 minute workshop on "Communicating the word: Evangelisation using new media" at a conference called "Living Mercy", a celebration to mark 150 years of the Mercy Sisters in Australia.
And it was a remarkable moment to observe the contribution these women have made, and are making to the Catholic Church in this country - in fields as diverse as education, communications, ministry, aged care, right through to advocacy on behalf of landmine victims, as is the case of Brisbane Mercy Sr Denise Coghlan RSM.
And I wondered, where would this Church be without women? These apostolic religious sisters, many of them in thei more elderly years have given their lives at the service of the Gospel.
I hope that with their courage, wisdom and inspiration, younger women in the Church too will discover their mission, vocation and calling - in perhaps new and charismatic ways.
Best wishes,
Beth Doherty
